Members and Friends:

You are warmly invited to attend the 2023 Annual General Meeting of the Nova Scotia Woodlot Owners and Operators Association, which will be held Saturday, May 13, at the Centre for Forestry Innovation, Nova Scotia Community College, Truro.

This is an annual meeting that you won’t want to miss. It will be a great way to learn more about the Family Forest Network, which conducting a province-wide pilot of ecologically sensitive forest practices. NSWOOA is  leading the 10-organization network.

The agenda includes:

  • Presentation of two new videos that describe the pilot project and why you should get involved.
  • A discussion about requirements for participation by Ryan Dickie, an extension forest professional with the project.
  • In the aftermath of Hurricane Fiona, which devastated woodlands in Nova Scotia last fall, Kevin Keys (project scientist with the Family Forest Network) will speak about the latest developments in our understanding of forest soils, climate change, and how to build resiliency in your woodlands.
  • A chance to see and learn more about the new NSCC forestry centre on the Truro campus.

What’s more: the meeting is a bargain! We lost touch with some of our members during the COVID years, but the directors have approved new membership fees that offer a real incentive to attend. You can buy a regular membership in NSWOOA for just $50 per year. This is a voting membership, which is available only to people who own or manage small woodlands. It includes free admission and lunch at the 2023 AGM. (Under the old dues structure, annual memberships were $35 and the AGM cost $25.)

For those who do not own or manage woodland, the directors have approved a non-voting associate membership for just $5 per year (or free with attendance at an NSWOOA field event, workshop or webinar). This is a great way to support the work of NSWOOA in promoting sustainable forest management.

Both categories of members must affirm that they support the association’s mission:

NSWOOA is an independent organization of woodlot owners and operators achieving prosperity, stewardship, and solidarity through the practice of ecologically, socially, and economically sustainable forestry.

A final agenda will be distributed on Monday, May 8.

Registration starts at 8:30 a.m., and the AGM concludes around 2. The cost is free for current regular members, or $25 for affiliate and non-members. To help us plan for meals, advance registration is strongly encouraged before Monday, May 8. You can register online at www.nswoods.ca/nswooa-2023-agm or call us toll-free at 1-855-NS-WOODS (1-855-679-6637).

I hope to see you in Truro,

Andy Kekacs, Executive Director
